Hi,
A newbie kind of question: Why do you mix 1:1 citric acid with MMS for only 20 seconds and 1:5 for 3 minutes? I thought you are always supposed to wait 3 minutes. I cannot find this info anywhere. Thanks in advance.

It takes longer for the lower concentration of citric acid to turn the sc into cd. Higher concentration of acid, faster the reaction is. You can see it in the color that the MMS changes to when the citric acid is added. It takes longer to get dark yellow with the 10% citric acid solution.

But there is a big difference in color when mixing 1:1 citric acid with MMS for 20 seconds and doing it for 3 minutes. After 2 minutes the color of the mix is brown and it smells also much more intensely. After only 20 seconds the smell is still relatively light and the mix is of yellow color. Doesn't it make any difference?

When I mix the 1:1 using the 50% citric acid mixture, my MMS is a very dark yellow almost to brown.

Are you using a 50% citric acid mixture when you're doing 1 drop MMS to 1 drop citric acid?

Yes, I do. Says 1:1 on label. Seems to darken more at 3 min comparing with 20 seconds.

I noticed, once, that I think a little flake of dried citric acid solution (from the cap) dropped into my MMS1 drops and it darkened right up and was WAY too strong with the amount of water that I usually use for my teeth-brushing bottle. I had to double the amount of water to get the right taste. I'm not 100% sure it was a dried flake and haven't tried to reproduce it. It was kind of scary. I was a little concerned about putting it in a sealed bottle, not knowing what happened. LOL! It was from the same bottles I always use...I don't know. Maybe something in the little glass beaker I use to mix it?

Oh, well, yes, 1:1 will darken more at 3 minutes. You are supposed to use the 20 second timing for the 1:1 citric acid. This is a 50% citric acid solution.

You only use the 3 minutes for the 5:1 citric acid. The 5:1 is a weaker citric acid solution. It is a 10% citric acid solution.

Originally, all we had was the 10% or the 5:1 citric acid solution (or people used lemon juice or vinegar). That's why you have the two timings.

If your bottle says 1:1, then use 1 drop citric acid activator and 1 drop MMS, and let it activate for 20 seconds. You will get an equivalent product to activating the 5:1 for 3 minutes (in terms of strength per dose)

Does this help?
