Cancer Ward is a book written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. He talks about being in prison in Russia where Kombucha was used experimentally on the captive cancer patients. If my memory serves me correctly, he was one of those cancer prisoners who was cured. Check me out, but it seems they referred to this "mushroom" as "the birch tree fungus".
