I can attest from first hand experience that taking the course is not a pre-requisite for meeting Jim in person. I suggest you follow Edwins advice and contact the church and let them know what your interest and intentions are. Jim is a regular guy and was tremendously amenable in my experience. I was even told that he waited up several hours past his normal bed time to meet me as I arrived to the mission very late at night and had to leave very early the following morning, and trust me I am by no means anyone of special importance. So if you truly want to meet Jim, I would say just set your heart on it, and make it happen!
