Hello,

About 4 years ago, when I first came across MMS, I ordered a pound of Sodium Chlorite flakes (80%).

I've had it stored in a plastic container (I think it was an ice cream container), not particularly air tight. It's not been exposed to light, though. It's been at room temperature.

I have never used any of it up until last week, where I made a batch of MMS.

The end result was a cloudy looking MMS solution.
When I activated it, it didn't get green/brown as fast as the normal MMS (bought from a supplier online) I had used up until then.
It does get that chlorine smell. But it just seems 'weak', if you know what I mean.

When I made the MMS from the flakes, I didn't heat the water all that much. I just heated it a bit, until I saw all the flakes had dissovled.
Is it vital to get the water + sodium chlorite flakes to a certain temperature for it to mix well enough?

Or did the flakes just go 'bad' from all these years (and perhaps poor storage conditions)?

Even if the flakes are of an inferior quality now, would it still be OK to make CDS from them? I guess I could just use more of the MMS solution that I make from the flakes, until I hit a high enough PPM count when making CDS, yes?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

My flakes are Oxychem and they are always white. When I buy drums they are always fresh it seems. So new, fresh Oxychem flakes should be white.

When I mix up the MMS solution it has a brownish to tan color, nothing floating on the surface. Jim has described such a mix as greenish, but I see it as brownish, tannish.

Neilson you should definitely be able to use your flakes for making CDS. If anything, they might put off less chlorine dioxide but it should still be fine for CDS.

Other producers of sodium chlorite have have differences in appearance in their flakes or powder. My experience is with Oxychem.
