I just tried making my 3'rd batch of CDS with my newly arrived AS1 diffuser. The AS1 barb clogged in about 15 minutes. The hose blew out of the reacter baby bottle (glass). I've been using Jim's earliest method, 1 oz MMS + 1 oz 50% citric acid in a 140 deg bath into 8 oz distilled water in a ice water bath. I'm using 1/4" fridge water line hose that appears impervious to ClO2.

Investigation of the AS1 it looks like the barb disolved in on itself on the inside diameter - the outside looks fine.

The through the nipple hose connection for the reacter is a great safety valve!

I will now revert to Mike's method of piercing a series of fine holes in the hose itself to act as a diffuser.

Has anyone encountered this?

Thanks. I had some gas leak problems on this batch I did today,,,,, I think I had some issues with the fact that my silicone hose has not arrived, so I used the HDPE - and it's so stiff that it can twist the nipple on the baby bottle, probably causing some gas leak issues, too.

I have some CDS now, and am hoping to have my new supplies before I make my next batch.

My first 3 batches were just fine. First was an andreas batch, and then 2 of the Jim1 batches. Oh well, onward and upward!

@fourfingerz - the one really good thing is that the nipple "blew" - which is what Jim said in his video he was wanting to happen if the gas backed up. My guess is that I'm going to have to stay on top of mine and watch to be sure the bubbles are coming out of the diffuser. Can you imagine how fast a plastic one would clog/back up?

I had been checking on the production and was in the process of lifting the reacter bottle to check on reacter bubbling rate (as there was practicaly no bubbling from the diffuser) - when the hose blew out. So monitoring the diffuser bubble rate is critical. I was using a 4 oz bottle (can't find a 2 oz as Jim suggests) so there was a larger gas release.
I will do a autopsy on the diffuser to see if the clog was just at the barb tip or well into the fitting.

I tried to insert a very fine pin into the hole, but the hole was so small I couldn't tell if it was blocked or if the hole was just too narrow for the pin.

Today I dissected the AS1 diffuser. I progressively cut the barb back to the stone and then broke the stone to follow the plastic fitting. The entire length plastic fitting was clogged solid. The clog material is black similar to the plastic. So it would appear that the ClO2 dissolved the fitting as it passed through. The stone chamber was completely clear and porous.

I don't see a remedy for using the AS1 for this purpose.

Perhaps the forced air method dilutes the gas enough to avoid the problem.

The folks who are bubbling through solid lid bottles should incorporate some safety valve of some type in the reactor . AS1 diffusers can become hose plugs!

Now - what to do with my remaining 2 AS1 diffusers - an aquarium?

I have to do something with them - they cost ~$8 ea to get them up here to Canada

this happen to me to yesterday... the black plastic close on it self...

I guess we need an air stone that is more resistible like the ones they use for Ozone Generators.
