to show you how easy it is to do, in both English and Spanish, KR has done 2 short videos on the making of 3000ppm CDS via an overnight batch (what we used to call the shotglass method), stabilizing it, and then checking the ppms in the morning. I'm putting both the videos and the URLs up - so you can go to YT and download to your computer if you wish. When using HCl to activate, use a 10% solution - or just use your 50% citric acid solution instead. The other piece missing is that when you use 30ml or 1 oz of water to test, with 1 mL of the CDS, your testing strip should read 100. Great kits are available at WPS4sale.com, but KR lives in Mexico and "makes do" - so it's good to see that.

Many thanks to KR for her permission to post this on the forum!

The initial part of the twp URLs is http://www. before the youtube.com - (if I run it all together, it will set it up as a video to show in the post)

Wow, thank you Pam and Kerri.

Kerri is such a lovely person, the perfect video-maker.

Lovely Spanish with an American accent, with a tinge of Mexican drawl.

Kerri does not mention the strength of HCL in this video. In a recent chat with the folks at WPS4sale.com, I was told that when generating CDS using this "overnight" method, we need to use 10% HCL rather than the 4% HCL.

They said that although I can still use the 4%HCL to activate sodium chlorite for bathing etc, If I want to make and use CDS using the "overnight" method, I need to use 10% HCL.

They also mentioned that the higher the altitude the stronger the CDS. I live at 6,000ft and I have suspected that altitude played a part in this somehow.

Any comments?

Joyce, I also noticed that Kerri did not state the HCl percentage. I can confirm that 4% does not produce as much ClO2 as 50% CA when making CDS. If you use more of the 4% HCl you can get a lot of ClO2.

However, there is a warning from Andreas about using "strong" HCl. From a 27 June 2013 email he says: "Careful with *strong* HCL.... it gases into the CDS and lowers pH." I am not clear on details of his comment. Still waiting for his CDS book to be published.

I live at 2500' elevation and have had two other people measure CDS ppm using the same equipment and ingredients with all three of us getting the same results. One of the other people lives at 1200' and the other at 500'. I don't know if 6000' would make a difference.

Kerri uses 10% HCl, (this is for 1 12 hr session) - if you only have 4% at home, do it twice.

In the Feb 2012 video (I think), Jim Humble was showing how to make a very high ppm CDS, and although this is the heat method, not the overnight method, the principle applies. What he did was make a batch of CDS in 4 oz of water, and then he turned around and made a second batch (new chemicals in the mixing jar) into the exiting 4oz, just adding more CLO2 into the same 4 oz of water. He did this several times and raised the ppms up to, I think, something ike 24000ppm.

Using the 4%, you would simply, at the end of your 12 hours, empty out the shot glass or wine glass, put new HCl and MMS into it, and then put it back into the same jar with the CDS you've already made. This obviously takes twice as long. But if you're making enough to last you for several weeks, it is a small inconvenience.

Thanks Pam for our clarification regarding the use of 4%HCL when generating CDS:

I just purchased the "squat" pint jar, plastic lids, and a little glass to use for the activation. It's not the exact votive candle holder thingee others have mentioned, but we'll see how it goes.

I'm ready to try it out and see what ppm I can get. However, I have 4% HCL and understand that to increase the strength, I need to repeat the activation process twice to bring up the ppm.

Question: would it work to use twice as much 4%HCL? In other words, if I used twice as much 4% HCL the first time around, would this raise the ppm the same as if I had activated a second batch into the first batch of CDS that had been generated?

JJ, you will get more ClO2 if you use twice as much 4% HCl. I have not tested that so can't say if you will get double the ClO2 or not. LaMotte test strips will give you an idea of the ClO2 concentration.

Your little glass reactor may not hold that much solution, so you might try filling it with plain water and see if it fits.

Let us know what you get!

Thanks, JB13.

I'll be using the below recipe (which I copied from wps4sale.com) for generating CDS using the "squat" pint jar. BTW, I hope to find an appropriate wide mouth gallon jar with plastic lid soon bc I need to make large batches. Here's the "travel kit" recipe:

>>> Add 18 ml of WPS1 to the glass cup, then add either: (a) 18 ml of citric acid 50% or, (b) 18 ml of HCl 10% acid.<<<

[Except I'm going to try my first batch using double the amount of 4%HCL which will be 36ml and with the 18ml MMSU it will be 54ml in all so it may not all fit into the little activator container, so I may have to use Pam"s suggestion of doing two batches.)

>>> Put the lid on tightly so no gas escapes. Leave at room temperature away from sunlight for approximately 12 hours till the liquid in the glass cup and the larger container are the same color. Gently remove the glass cup from the 16 oz glass jar (again, using your fingers inside the glass pressing outwards). Avoid spilling the residue from the glass cup into the CDS you now have. Dispose of the residue in the glass cup. The 240 ml or 8 oz of distilled water is now CDS and should measure 3,000-4,500 ppm.
CDS can be stabilized by adding 5 ml of unactivated WPS1 for every 240 ml of CDS solution. <<<

QUESTION:
What proportions should I use for testing using the LaMotte test strips? (n Kerri's recent video, doesn't she use 30parts distilled water to 1 part CDS for testing?)

To clarify, I will be making a smaller batch than Kerri did in her video. This appears to be a math problem... yikes! HELP!

Hi jj.

Michael seems to use more solution than what I found necessary to get to 3000 ppm. My testing, along with others, used 12 ml of both ingredients. Again, LaMotte ClO2 test strips will tell you what you have.

Since the test strips won't directly read 3000 ppm, you will need to dilute a sample of your CDS so the test strips can read the ppm. If you are expecting to get 3000 ppm, I would add 1 ml of the CDS to 60 ml of distilled water. If your CDS is 3000 ppm, the color should match the 50 ppm color on the test strip container. So, multiply 60 x 50 = 3000. That is 1 part in 60 or 1:60 ratio.

Be sure to read the instructions on the LaMotte container as what you saw in the video is not quite correct. It says to DIP (don't stir, just dip and wait 2 seconds) a strip in the diluted solution for 2 full seconds (say, 1 thousand one, 1 thousand 2) and WITHOUT FLICKING OFF ANY SOLUTION ON THE STRIP, WAIT 10 SECONDS, then do the color matching.

For me, I can discern color changes better at the 50 color on the container.

Also, I suggest you use distilled water for testing as I have gotten wrong readings when using tap water. Who knows what's in your tap water!

Hope that helps.
