Protocol for bad ear infection for a dog (french poodle)

Hi All, I am doing some research as to what protocol to use for a friend's dog that has a bad ear infection - apparently the vet cleaned it out, but it seems the ears are now worse - my friend says it almost looks raw inside the ears. There is also a very smelly black discharge that keeps seeping out, even though she does clean the ears daily. Poor dog is also in a lot of pain. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
