Hi. I have a box turtle which I have had since 2007. Her name is Vivian. I noticed she is not eating and not moving much, and she seems to be soaking herself all the time, even through the night. Often they will do that when they are going to lay eggs. I did see her laying eggs one night so I chalked it up to that. But she has not regained stamina and still doesn't move much. I was observing her this morning and noticed a small amount of nasal discharge. Her eyes are clear and not swollen at all so I'm hoping I can nip this in the bud. Instead of prying her mouth open and trying to get MMS into her, I was thinking of soaking her in MMS, initially, to see if that helps. Would anyone venture a guess as to how much MMS I would use to say, a gallon of water? The turtle weighs 1 pound, 10 oz.

I suggest you do more reading and study and research than going by a "quick response"
on a discussion forum, which could be dangerous.

Jim Humble's "MMS Health Recovery Guidebook" has a chapter on Animals.
(see my website; you can download a PDF version fairly cheaply)
But he doesn't mention reptiles, amphibians, fish, or birds.

I don't remember seeing any references anywhere to using ClO2 with non-mammalian animals.

Soaking the turtle might work, but you would have to be careful with their eyes.
Since there is left over HCl (or whatever acid), that could be an issue, too.
You might want to use 100% pre-activated CDS instead of acid-activated MMS(1).

You might also use Sodium Chlorite Solution (the "water purifier") instead of ClO2,
but I don't know how the inner workings of a turtle's digestive system work.

I wish I could be of more help.

Hi! I have Jim's book and I have read the section on Animals. I posted in case anyone had any experience to share, since there was nothing regarding reptiles. I decided to try soaking her in 12 drops of MMS to a gallon of water. I did that for two days and I didn't see any improvement. Today, I used 20 drops to a gallon of water. I can't imagine that small amount would be harmful to her eyes. I may try the CDS. Thank you for your thoughts. I'll keep on posting. It may help someone else in the future.

Hi! The turtle is doing very well! She seems 95% back to good health. What a huge positive change in her health. I am still waiting for her appetite to return so I will continue soaking her 2x a day for 2 hours until that happens. I have added DMSO to the MMS in the soaking water.

Glad to hear she's doing better.

The acid concern was that only about 10% to maybe 20% of the acid-activated SCS
converts to ClO2. So there is always some residual acid and SCS levels.
I don't think I've read what those levels are. Are they both 80% to 90%?
Or is most of the acid used up and most of the left over solution is SCS?
Maybe that's the implication.

But you can always use pH Test Strips to see what the pH of the soaking solution is.
That is probably a good idea. Sorry I didn't think to mention that before.

And remember that DMSO degrades the ClO2 "fairly quickly".
I don't think I've read how fast. But probably a matter of minutes or thereabouts.
