G'day All,

I have a pet goldfish in an aquarium with a white growth on it's tail. Does anyone have any experience treating goldfish with MMS?

I don't want to kill it finding out!

Cheers Don

Hi Don. I wouldn't hesitate to use CDS as it dissipates without leaving residue. MMS, activated leaves residual components which would build in concentration until you change the water. At the very least, only add MMS unactivated. It will activate over time.

Hi Don,

I've been adding 1 drop per gallon weekly to my goldfish tank to help keep it odor-free. The goldfish are doing fine with that. I don't know if that would be enough MMS to resolve the growth, though.

Best,
dish

G'day All,

Just to let you know,

I added 1 drop of unactivated MMS to the tank (only 60L) to see what happened. Not much. A few days later I added 6 drops unactivated MMS, and watched. The fish started acting a bit strange, sort of jittery, so in about 1/2 hour after adding the MMS I changed 1/2 the water with fresh. The fish looked a lot happier and started feeding better.
A week or so later - the growth has almost gone. I don't know if it fell off or retracted, but it is almost gone and the fish is more active.

Was it the MMS, or the water change, or a combination of both... I don't know but is has worked for the time being. I now should look after the poor thing better - it does get a bit neglected.

Cheers and thanks Don

They may have reacted to the citric acid, who knows, but next time use the sodium clorite drops ( mms ) only. It will activate over time with out the acid. I use the clorite without the acid in my silky's water bowel.
Citric acid or lemons raise the PH when injested into the stomach but I would not have thought 6 drops in 60 litres would do anything.

Thanks Woofy,

I didn't use activated MMS, just MMS as mentioned. Talking of Silky's... I should use it in my dogs water!

Also, I just noted. Acid lowers pH, Alkiline raises it. MMS pH 13, citric acid pH about 2.

Cheers Don :)
