Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy is generally caused due irrigation in nerve which is present in spine condition. Radiculopathy can occur in any part of the spine, but it most commonly occurs in the lower back.

Types of Radiculopathy

Types of radiculopathy depends on the location:

Lumbar radiculopathy

It is compression of the nerve root in the lower back. It can lead to sciatica or shooting pain in the legs. It’s usually caused when a herniated disk or bone spur in the spine presses on the nerve. It generally affects the one side of the body. It can cause pain in hips, back, thigh. Most commonly people of age between 60+ suffers from it.

Cervical radiculopathy

It is compression of the nerve or is caused due to pain in a pinched nerve in the neck. It causes sharp pain and tingling in neck. The person suffering from often recovers from it without any medications. But if not a physical therapy, a surgery may help. Generally people of age between 41-60 suffers from it.

Thoracic radiculopathy

It is a compression of nerve or is caused due to pinched nerve in the middle of spine. It can cause swelling in the region where the nerve is affected. It can easily be treated by self care and physic therapy. It can cause a band like pain around chest. Generally people of age between 41-60 suffers from it.

Cause of Radiculopathy?

Bending your neck in different directions increase pressure on your vertebrates and disc. The disc functions by absorbing the shock produced by your sudden neck movements. These discs and vertebrates sometimes cannot cope with your sudden movements and sometimes bulges out towards nerve roots causing the nerves to compress.

Sometimes our disc get injured due to sudden heavy pressure as a resultant of your sudden neck movements. This damage to disc can lead to a disease called herniated disc.

This condition occurs when the soft center of a spinal disk pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior casing.

Some herniated discs cause no symptoms. Others can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg. It can cause reduction in touch sensation or uncomfortable tingling or burning.
Pain as a symptom can be described as:

Pain described as “sharp” or “pins-and-needles” or “popping sensation” in cervical region.
General dull ache or numbness anywhere along the pathway of the nerve.
Pain that worsens with certain neck movements.
Pain that improves when the arm is lifted over and behind the head (relieving tension on the spinal nerve).

Home remedies to cure radiculopathy

Exercise
Rotate your head in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions, and nod the neck side to side from one shoulder to the other. Do this for 10 minutes 2 or 3 times daily. This will help you to get flexible muscles. Rotate your arms in clockwise and counter-clockwise directions, and fold and unfold your fists at regular intervals to control pain. You can also try to do low-impact aerobic exercises like swimming or brisk walking for 30 minutes at least 5 times a week. Do cycling on a regular basis keeping your back straight while cycling. If you are overweight, diet and exercise are very important for improving back pain.
Physical therapy

It is important for nearly everyone with disk disease. Therapists will teach you how to properly lift, dress, walk, and perform other activities. They teach you how to strengthen muscles that help support the spine. You will also learn how to increase flexibility in your spine and legs. Find a comfortable position for rest. You might prefer lying on the floor or a medium-firm bed with a small pillow under your head and another under your knees. Or you can try lying on your side with a pillow between your. Don’t stay in one position for too long. Avoid heavy lifting or twisting your back for the first 6 weeks after the pain starts.

Turmeric

Turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can help relieve swelling and pain associated with disc and other types of lower back pain. The spice is available in powdered form and also in capsules and tablets, allowing people to consume it easily if they do not want to add the spice to food. Turmeric is particularly helpful for sciatica pain caused by tense muscles or muscle spasms, since it can help relieve these problems.
Garlic

Garlic oil An oil prepared from garlic and rubbed on the affected part will give great relief. This oil is prepared by frying 10 cloves of garlic in 60 grams of oil in a frying pan. They should be fried slowly till they are brown. After it is cooled, it should be applied vigorously on the affected part and allowed to remain there for three hours. The patient may thereafter have a warm bath. This treatment should be continued for at least 15 days.

Heat and cold therapy

Use a heat or cold pad in alternation. In order to reduce inflammation, it is advisable to apply a cold pad for the first few days, and later, switch to the heat pack. You can heat a pad by placing it in the microwave for around 15 minutes. Further, apply it on the affected area after every 2 to 3 hour.

Tips

Physical Therapy
Your doctor might send you to a physical therapist for treatment. Physical therapy helps you stretch your neck and shoulder muscles. This makes them stronger and ultimately helps to relieve pain. You might also have neck traction, which involves using weights to increase the space between the cervical joints and relieve the pressure on the cervical discs and nerve roots.
Medications

Reduce tension by practicing Pranayam & meditation.
Have milk, milk products, green vegetables, small fishes They contain calcium.
Avoid sitting long times in front of computers. Take a walk for every half an hour
