Has has anyone suggested that the citric acid crystals used as an activator must be Food grade Non-GMO?. I suspect all of us here on the forum know all the horrors of Monsanto.

The documentary, "the world according to Monsanto" shook me to the core! If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it!

For the record I bought from PGL and mineral-solutions.net.

Do I need to be concerned? What do you guys think?

Some resellers of MMS are declaring there citric acid as organic and non-GMO.

I found this quote on line and it provided some some relief. "We’re concerned with the source organism itself and not the substrate. A substrate of commodity corn is acceptable.”

According to www.non-gmoreport.com/articles/mar06/non_organic.php:

Citric acid and enzymes
Citric acid, used widely as a preservative in organic foods, is another problem. Citric acid is commonly derived from a fungus, Aspergillus Niger, which may be GM. The fungus is combined with a substrate made from commodity corn, which could also be GM. However, Baker says only the fungus raises GMO concerns because the corn substrate is removed. “We’re concerned with the source organism itself and not the substrate. A substrate of commodity corn is acceptable.”

Enzymes present a similar challenge because they are often produced from GM microorganisms. Enzymes are used in food processing to convert starch to sugar, clarify fruit juice, or clot milk protein to make cheese. The GM microorganism is removed during food processing.

Baker says cultures used in dairy production, such as lactobacillus, are also increasingly derived from GM sources.

Organic certifiers require that organic food processors use enzymes derived from non-GM microorganisms.

I contacted Mineral-solutions.net and this was their response:

Hi Victor, "food grade" is the grade (as opposed to technical grade, reagent grade, pharmaceutical grade etc).

As for the Citric, I don't think that kind of data is given on MSDS sheets since it's a chemical rather than a food complex. That is to say it either is Citric acid or it isn't (from a molecular structure point of view), whereas a plant is a combination of many chemicals, enzymes, etc and has DNA which a chemical does not, so even if it was derivated from a GMO plant source, there are no genetics in citric acid.

We include citric free in the kit, but if you're unsure about it then citric acid is available very cheaply in supermarkets. It's usually found near salt, baking powder etc

Regards
Paul

Sincerely,
Mineral-Solutions

In america you can buy Citric Acid- Food Grade, Organic, FCC/UPC Kosher Non-GMO.

On a side note more than 50% of all citric acid is produced by China, some state they are non-GMO while others omit that information.

At the moment because I have had successful results from both citric acid sources (what was provided by PGL and Mineral-solutions .net), I presume they are both safe, effective and the GMO precaution is of no consequence. Further evidence in the field of practice by others will only tell and obviously buying your own from a source that states it is non-GMO will give you peace of mind.

Natural source Citric acid from non GM fruits or non GM mold like the Aspergillus niger or lemons is key in my philosophical point of few. We know that genetically modified organisms are not safe and any of their by products must be held suspect!
