I believe there is truth in what the NIH National Library of Medicine states:
"Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites that can exist as potentially active but inert entities outside of cells."

The key point being "intracellular parasites". Forcing zinc into the cells proved to be an effective measure during the CV phenomenon, as did the anti-parasitic treatments and medications. It seems to be more of a misclassification rather than non-existent. Whether the misclassification was intentional, hopefully one day we'll have the luxury to investigate the origin.
