Hi there

My last batch of citric acid is slightly yellow/orange.
When I use it to activate 28% Sodium Chlorite it seems to work.

How can I tell if the citric acid has gone bad or tainted?

I have found that I have to have 2 sets of everything - a set for CA and a set for MMS, labeled, - otherwise, I will cross contaminate - and it only takes a little bit. Given the ease of getting citric acid, you may want to make a new batch. It sounds like there might be a very tiny amount of MMS in the batch (that yellow brown tint is the clue) - I don't think it will affect the CA as much as it would affect the MMS. If it's not affecting the mms you're making you may be OK. I'll let one of the gurus in this area, like Michael or Steve chime in.

I did two batches and the the second time I cleaned my tools even more and got the same result.
The other thing is I did my CA first so no MMS was present in my tools.
Another clue was I made a 120ml batch with leftover CA from one jar of CA cristal and it came out perfect.
When I used an other new jar of CA cristal, that is when I got this tint.

Sounds like something in the CA, then, I don't know. (Maybe it's older?) If it's working with your MMS1 to make MMS, I wouldn't worry too much. Otherwise, stay with the one you know will be clear.

I purchase my CA from Mountain Rose Herbs ( www.mountainroseherbs.com ) It's a bit more expensive, but I've never had the yellowing issue. I did purchase some off ebay once, and noticed a slight yellowing. I've not used the citric acid you can buy in the grocery store with the canning supplies, so I can't speak to that.

My USP grade citric acid from Jungunzlauer is always clear, I've never seen a yellow tint.
