:ohmy: I have not been able to find test strips to test higher than 500 PPM when making CDS. Maybe it does not matter as you dilute it with distilled water to achieve the lower readings needed for protocol. Where it does matter is when the CDS is injected into the water in a continuous basis such as in a water supply for livestock. Any ideas or solutions highly appreciated.

I've been contemplating this myself. Nose pumps drawing from a plastic tank would be one method. Another thought was the water motor from an oscillating lawn sprinkler running a diastolic metering pump similar to the ones used for meds. The least accurate would be a venturi with a needle valve. Keep in mind that UV destroys CDS, and high temps cause the CDS to gas, therfore an underground or insulated p[lastic tank.

How many gallons per day does your herd drink?

For a dairy herd, a maintenance dose in their grain as they come through the parlour would be pretty simple.

It is not my herd but a farmer associate. Presently he is using H2O2 with an automatic metering system I believe it is set at 30 PPM. He had to go to H2O2 due to some contamination in the water that was reflected in his milk test. We are anticipating using CDS but cannot find much information on a system. It appears that he can use the H2O2 metering system but we have to find out how much to use for both usefulness and to minimize the cost with out waste. In our plan we need to be able to make the CDS to a certain and consistent value so once the metering system is set it will operate with minimum attention. Comments appreciated.

If there are pathogens in the water, they will use up some of the CDS in their destruction. I would suggest that the testing should be done from the trough water in order to be sure that pathogens in the water are knocked off. Dosage for ingestion is around 24 ppm, so trough water could be up to 24 ppm for internal maintenance but always more than 0 which would indicate that not all the pathogens in the water were being eliminated. The H2O2 metering system should be able to handle the CDS.
Does the pathogen content of the water supply vary with rainfall or other factors?

For the dairy, it would be worth considering using CDS for udder wash and parlour wash as well.

You can try with MMS2, calcium hipoclorite (400 mg for 50 liters of water)

I am not sure if the bacteria count was caused by the water or just by adding the H2O2 into the drinking system cleared up the bacteria in the milk production, I remember that the bad count was Coliform bacteria which I think is caused by rotting and or dead animals in the source. They may have a dug well which would easily be a source for such an occurance. I still would like to be able to test the CDS after it is produced as it is impossible to determine the saturation judging from the color.

Hi, Roy. Yes, The 0 - 500 ppm are the readily available range. Do you have any? If the solution you are measuring is at the top of the range, dilute it 10 times and test again. - 1ml cds + 9 ml water = 1 in 10. test again. Continue to dilute and test until the test is near the middle of the range for best accuracy. The CDS concentration will then be Testreading x dilution factor.
If you always use the same quantities of Sodium Chlorite, acid and water when preparing the CDS, the concentration will always be very close to the same.

Many years ago, when I was a director on the board of the community water supply, we had a monthly water analysis come back with coliform content. It turned out that the screen on the water tower overflow had rusted out, and a starling had built her nest inside. :>)
