Hi Everyone!

I've been able to acquire some of the items needed for making CDS, but not all. Is there a list if items needed someone has? We live outside a small town and it's over an hour's drive to the nearest large shopping area, so if I had a good list of things needed I could possibly get them all in one trip.

I did order the diffuser and two ounce baby bottle from the internet, but we are having trouble finding the tubing in the correct size. All we were able to find today was 3/16" inside diam. which is too big, I think. Isn't it supposed to be 3/16" outside diam.? Also it is poly-vinyl and I don't think this it he type to use. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Also, I know Jim goes over a list somewhere in the video, but don't remember where and if he said what kind of vinyl.

JH uses the HDPE (high density polyethylene) tubing. It's fairly stiff. I first used the vinyl and it had a few problems (the residual gas in the tube after the process tended to damage the tubing) -

Then I got the HDPE - I used the 1/4" inner diameter, which is 3/8" outer diameter. This was fine, and it actually fit the corks I had purchased from the wine-making supplies store, which had a 3/8" hole in them. But when I tried to add the diffuser, even though the barb was 1/4", for some reason I couldn't get it to fit really tight in the 1/4" inner diameter - so I ordered some tubing that was 3/16" inner diameter, and I think it will fit the barb much better - however, it will not fit the cork, so I'm now looking for a specially drilled silicone stopper. I've got an email into a place that Nir recommended, but they have not gotten back to me with a price.

I've made CDS maybe 5 or 6 times, and it seems like I do it differently every time (moving target, as they say) - I do hope to get it stabilized into a single process at some point. There are things I see in each of the videos that I think are good. I like JH's video where he does one 8 oz bottle and moves the tubing to another 8 oz bottle when the first is saturated. The thing I like about it is that I can test the strength of the mixture before I move the tubing to the next bottle. I also like having a mixing bottle that is fairly close in size to the amount of mms1/CA that I'm using in the process. Now I want to incorporate the diffusers into the mix.

Thanks Pam, Can you share where you got your HDPE? Locally we've only one plumbing supply and one hardware store. I live in Eureka, MT, but we do travel the hour-plus to get to a bigger shopping area that has Home Depot and Lowes and pet supply and Costco. I guess I'll just have make some calls, there is a medical supply in Kalispell that may have some tubing.

Have you seen the video of the man from Sweden (or it seemed so by his accent), that used an aquarium bubblier to make the CDS? He was using three bottles connected with tubing through the lids with the last bottle not capped. It was really neat to see the CDS as it gradually increased in strength in each bottle. I think he said he then would mix all three bottles to assure they all had the correct amount of CDS.

I am so ready to get started on this.

United States Plastic Corp has TYGON hose. This is what you need. You can buy it by the foot or about a 50 foot roll. about Mine is 3/16 or 4ml ID x 6ml OD $28.00 for a roll.
Tygon® Laboratory Tubing R-3603 Resistant to ozone
Tygon® Laboratory Tubing R-3603
The most consistently reliable tubing for the transfer of liquids and gases, Tygon® Laboratory Tubing handles virtually all inorganic chemicals found in today's laboratories. Crystal clear, flexible (Durometer Hardness, Shore A, 55) tubing of superior quality. Outstanding chemical resistance. Lot-to-lot consistency for reproducible results. Increases productivity in peristaltic pumps -- outlasts other clear tubing 2 to 1. Ideal for condensers, incubators, desiccators, gas lines and drain lines. Crystal-clear and flexible, Tygon® Laboratory Tubing handles virtually all inorganic chemicals found in the lab. It is non-oxidizing and non-contaminating. Long-lasting and crack-resistant, Tygon® Laboratory Tubing is less permeable than rubber tubing. The glassy-smooth inner bore helps prevent buildup so that cleaning is facilitated. Autoclavable. Max working temp 165°F. Remains flexible at -45°F (-43°C). Complies with Federal Specifications L-T-790A Type II for lab applications. OK for ozone. Tubing is priced per foot; sold in 10 ft. intervals only, except the metric sizes which are sold in package lots only.
I also bought spray bottles from them for MMS use.

My HDPE I got at Home Depot, but the newer hose is the Tygon, which has been mentioned, and I think it will be fine. My closest HD is in Olympia, which is 45 minutes away - so I tend to do a lot of online stuff.

Pam,

I believe Jim said that it was the 'Polypropylene' tubing that was to be used.. NOT the Polyethylene.... no ?

I am trying to find out if we really can use the Polyethylene tubing, because trying to find the Polypropylene tubing is next to impossible. AND.... if you dio find it, you have to buy a whole spindle or roll of it.

I've tried plumbing supply stores, Home Depot's and the like.... no way do they handle the Polypropylene.

Any ideas ?

:-)

thanks,

Clint
