I ordered some CDS since it seemed simpler to use than original mms. I read that it was more delicate and can breakdown if not stored correctly. I put it in a clear spray bottle thinking that was ok since it would always be kept out of light. I usually had it in the fridge but accidentally left it out in the open for a couple hours, although it was still out of light.

Now maybe I'm imagining things, but it doesn't seem to smell as strong and doesn't seem to have the same slight antiseptic sting when I use it topically. Did I totally mess up that bottle? Would that have been enough for it to break down? Should I have kept it in its dark bottle and never had it out of the refrigerator?

When CDS is kept in a fridge when not being used, it should keep a long time, with slow reduction of chlorine dioxide content. I personally kept one liter of CDS in a glass bottle NOT in a fridge, and in a dark closet, for over one year and the CLO2 content reduced by about one half.

It may be that your CDS is a type with added MMS (NaCLO2) which some claim "stabilizes" the CDS. I suspect the addition of MMS to CDS shortens the life of CDS. Some day I may test that idea.

If your spray bottle is not gas-tight and was kept at room temperature, then the CDS gas could have escaped. When CDS is kept below 50F, it does not outgas very much.
