I just made my first batch of CDS using the overnight method. Everything seemed to work well, got a nice yellow color, test strip results were good.

However, the CDS kept smoking, even after I had removed the MMS glass from the container. I was concerned about pouring it into a bottle and capping it, that pressure would build up and the bottle would explode. I even added more MMS solution to stabilize it, but it kept smoking.

I left the lid off for a while, kept smoking. Finally, I just bottled it and put it in the refrigerator with fingers crossed. I just checked it and the smoking has stopped and cleared.

I am mentioning this because no where on any videos or anything I have read, did anyone mention that the solution keeps smoking. Is this normal?

And I am wondering if the CDS got weaker because I waited like an hour before I finally bottled it. I am guessing I should test it again.

Finally, could you clear up how you mix the CDS with water to drink. Do you take the drops directly from the full strength CDS solution? If so, how many drops mixed with how much water?

Thank you, I am a total newbie to this!

Regards,
Jan

Yes "smoke" is normal for CDS above 11 degrees C. I produce the CDS over night, take out the reactor glass, then put the container in the fridge to cool down. I also refrigerate the storage bottle prior to filling it. Always have good ventilation when working with it - a whiff will make you cough.

Dosage is done in ml . At CDS 3000ppm (which you presumably produced) 1 millilitre (1 ml) (which is also 1 cubic centimetre (1 cc)) you would take 1 ml per dose (1 ml = 3 drops of MMS)

Jan, you would mix that 1mL in 2-3 oz off water, to take a dose. You don't do CDS directly from the mix.

My guess is that by allowing the gas to escape, you have weakened the CDS somewhat. You may want to test again, and if you find that you have less than 3000ppm, then adjust the size of your dosing. (If you have, say, 2000ppm, you can up your dose size by 1/3.

Thank you both, for the fast replies!

Yes, I will retest the strength because I may have weakened it because I kept taking the lid off for a few minutes, thinking that might clear the "smoking" (which it didn't) before I finally got brave enough to put it in the refrigerator. Next time I'll just rush it into the fridge.

And thanks very much for the info on how much to mix with how much water - I was totally confused by that! I'm not good with math and to start at least, I'd rather mix up one dose at a time, than make up a whole day's bottle.

I had made the CDS outside last night because our temps went down to low 60's, high 50's so I thought that would be cool enough. Forgot to chill the distilled water first, however.

Frankly, I was thrilled that it worked the first time out and I actually got 3000 strength according to the test strip reading in the dilution as I read here to do.

Thanks again for your help!

Jan, the "smoking" you saw is Clo2 gas outgassing and is usually caused by too much sunlight, even non-direct sunlight, striking the CDS containers. That is why we suggest the overnight activation takes place in a dark location.

Another suggestion I would make, which we have discovered while testing the new CDH (not a new form of CDS) is that the containers are not opened until they have been in a fridge long enough to cool down the solutions.

So, next time you make CDS, after the overnight activation, put the unopened receiver container in the fridge for about 2 hours. Then, take it out of the fridge, remove the lid and take out the reactor container and recap the receiver container.

When I do that, I pull the curtains to keep as much sunlight, even non-direct sunlight, away from the containers.

And, of course, keep the CDS in the fridge until you need to use it.

Yes, because it's more than sunlight that will degrade the ClO2 - elevated temperatures will also cause the gas to separate from the water.
