Recently bought Sodium Chlorite doesn't work. was created by mart1n
I doubt it's Sodium Chlorite at all. I made NaClO2 28% of it I thought but it doesn't even smell ClO2 when adding activator. No yellow/amber coloring either.
I got it from "Sigma Aldrich", a renowned chemical supplier. 2KG cost me 500 bucks. No MMS
Has this happened to anyone else before?
Anyone sees anything wrong here? I don't.

Odd. Maybe the company put something else besides NaCLO2 in the container?
A simple formula to make MMS
Just use the number 2.57
Multiply the amount of Sodium Chlorite
you want to use by 2.57 and the answer will
be how much water you need. (weight)
454 x 2.57 = 1166.78 (1167) (example)
Divide the amount of water you want to
use by 2.57 and this is how much Sodium
Chlorite you need. (weight)
1167 / 2.57 = 454 (example)
What kind of water did you use?

The list of additives is quite long but don't know what to make of it other than understanding it to be part of the remaining 20% of "stabilizing salts" :
Ag: ≤5 mg/kg
Al: ≤5 mg/kg
Ba: ≤5 mg/kg
Bi: ≤5 mg/kg
Ca: ≤50 mg/kg
Cd: ≤5 mg/kg
Co: ≤5 mg/kg
Cr: ≤5 mg/kg
Cu: ≤5 mg/kg
Fe: ≤5 mg/kg
K: ≤1000 mg/kg
Li: ≤5 mg/kg
Mg: ≤10 mg/kg
Mn: ≤5 mg/kg
Mo: ≤5 mg/kg
Ni: ≤5 mg/kg
Pb: ≤5 mg/kg
Sr: ≤5 mg/kg
Tl: ≤5 mg/kg
Zn: ≤5 mg/kg
The "≤ 1000mg of K (potassium?) per KG" may mess it up but this would be something for a chemist to look into. It does sparkle when adding activator (?!)
I used de-ionized water. First time I used that btw. They sell it at gas stations for car batteries. Can't get your hands on distilled water over here. But I have used all kinds of water and never had any trouble. May have to experiment with other water to see if it's the water causing the trouble.
And yes I do apply the 2,57 method to make MMS. Always works.
Good questions ClO2, thanks. This should be an interesting problem for Tomas the chemist. Anyone got his email?
I don't know how this post is going to look like, the formatting seems totally off..

Well that actually would not surprise me as Sigma Aldrich has been bought up by Merck. Although the generation of chlorine dioxide is mentioned in the uses specifications.CLO2 wrote: Odd. Maybe the company put something else besides NaCLO2 in the container?

This version of forum software does have its problems.
I will send you Tomas' email addresses I have via PM. Have not gotten a response from him in a couple of years. I notice that he has not been on FakeBook for a long time either. Hope he is okay.
Let us know what you find out about your MMS not working.

I finally got to check another batch of prepared MMS today and that one activates as it should. I used different water and Sodium Chlorite from a different container, so still not quite sure what went wrong with the first batch. Will do additional testing later.
