Cows with mastitis

I have been reading about giving cows MMS. I milk a small biodynamic dairy herd of 12 cows who are all calving at present and we are getting a lot of mastitis. The calves are left on their mums for a couple of days and then contained and the cows come in twice a day to feed the calves. In the morning they are milked out after the calves have had their fill, but we have 3 out of the 7 that have calved with mastitis. They receive a kilo of grain while being milked along with minerals, apple cider vinegar etc. and are on pasture and sileage for the rest of the day. They are treated with homeopathics and that is fairly successful. At times the mastitis is rampant and we are forced to use antibiotics. We are giving one cow MMS orally, but I was wondering about injecting it up through the teat and into the infected quarter. Would anyone be able to advise if they have tried this and what strength MMS we would use. Thanks for any help.

I saved a Highland cow (search for neula) with mastitis earlier this year with oral mms and then switched to a mix of mms / cds orally. I believe the right side quarters are lost but she survived and nursed a calf to good health on the left - that loss would still be a disaster for a dairy cow.

Search user drgreen - he is presently saving a dairy calf with scours with CDI (that’s basically cds produced in saline solution). I've no experience with injections - but I wouldn't think injecting mms would not be good (acidic) - but CDI appears to be extremely effective - and results are rapid

Thanks fourfingerz. I actually want to squirt it up through the teat and into the infected quarter. She has a hard core in the udder and I am hoping we can dissolve that. Just wondering what strength MMS to use - I feel MMS is the answer in this instance as it seems to have a more effective result. We can only get to her twice a day. Do you think 10 drops in 1/2 glass water would be too strong?

As with human oral doses - I would start off low (and watch the reaction) and increase (probably rapidly) over time. Say 2 drops in 1/2 glass. If you have access to DMSO - that would probably help in the mix.

As far as I know you'll be breaking new ground.

We have been treating 3 cows with mastitis at the dairy. They were all originally on antibiotics and that went some way to improve them, but 2 of them have had serious issues for the past 2 weeks. We started with 3 drops and have now increased the dose to 5 and we are squirting 5 drops up the infected teats (quarters) in 30ml of water and have recently added drop for drop of DMSO. There is some improvement and in fact one cow is completely better. The other two are struggling. One in particular has one very bad quarter. Do you think we could increase the number of drops? They are also receiving orally 3ml of CDS in 1/2 glass of water in their feed daily. Unfortunately, they can only be treated once a day. So, although progress is slow, it is happening and I guess if you think about a cow being 400kg, maybe we are being a little too careful with the oral dose in particular.

I feed 20 - 25 drops MMS activated with Citric Acid 50 % mixed with 10 cc's of CDS 6000 ppm mixed with 16 oz of water in her feed three times a day - so you should be able to go up significantly.

We are patiently waiting for user "drgreen" to elaborate on the CDI inject-able protocol he used on Calvin. Calvin was dieing with scours and was saved - rapidly. So CDI injections appear to be the best therapy - if you can access / confine the animal .

I have no doubt that MMS should help in cases of mastitis. Probably finding the correct dosage is the key, but I just want to suggest if you cannot gain successs using your current protocol, you might want to look into dilute Hydrochloric acid therapy. I have had excellent luck using it on calves and you may read my accounts with it at:

Only probem is, I would suggest giving it IV which may be a problem for some cattlemen. It can be given IM, but it often causes a tremedous amount of stinging in the muscle tissue when given that route.

Dilute HCL was first give to cattle back in the 1930s. In Dr. Burr Ferguson's text, Facts and Phagocytes, he writes of a herd he treated with abortive mastitis:

"This was a series of 31 cases and each cow with the udder infection was given 100-125cc of Hydrochloric acid iv at 1:200. Three of the well advanced cases went on with the infection in spite of HCL and were destroyed. The others after 3-4 injections of acid showed such decreases in bacterial counts in the milk that they were again put back into dairy service".
