Hi Pam,
it's Alex here and this is my first post. I am sorry to bother but you seem to be the right person to ask to. I am a bit cofused. I am planning to make some CDS following the latest Jim Humble's video. There is one thing I don't understand though.
I know that in the reacting bottle I have to add 1oz of MMS to 1oz of citric acid. What confuses me is that Jim and everyone else in the forum talk about a 50% citric acid solution. How do I make a 50% citric acid solution??? I have just received my supply of 1 bottle of MMS and 5 bottles of 10% citric acid solution...that's not the right one, is it?
How can I make a 50% citric acid solution???
Could you please give me a simple and practical example to follow to be able to proceed with my experiment?
I would very much appreciate your help.
Thank you very much for your very helpful advice on this forum.
Alex
Hi, Alex. There are lots of people here who have really good experience making MMS and citric acid <G>.
Everything is done by weight, BUT, water and citric acid are so close in weight, you can simply take an amount of distilled or reversed osmosis water (say 1/3 cup) and add to it the same amount of citric acid (packed) - (a packed 1/3 cup, if you've used 1/3 cup water) and mix. It may take a while for the acid to dissolve (I put mine in a pyrex cooking container and heat on the stove for a bit, low heat, to help it dissolve - otherwise, you can just put it somewhere out of the way and leave it for a while, and it will dissolve) -
I use only glass, plastic and wood when making citric acid and MMS. I'm not so sure it's as big a deal with citric acid, but I just want to stay in the habit of using one set of "utensils" for my MMS production. MMS will oxidize metal, so you definitely want it away from your metals. Also, if you have natural stone counters, I'd be sure to wipe up any spilled citric acid. I have a nice set of concentric rings in mine, and that tile will have to be replaced, eventually. Just didn't think -
