My question is - how can I measure the PPM in the CDS I have made with test strips that only go to 100 PPM, how much do I dilute the CDS to use 100 PPM test strips.
thank you Moyra T

Hi Moyra T,

Take 1 ml of your CDS and add 1oz (30ml) of distilled water. If it tests at 100 ppm, then it is 3000 ppm CDS. Add another 1oz of water and it should test at 50 ppm, add another 2oz water (total 4oz water) and it should test at 25 ppm. If all these results occur, then you have 3000 ppm CDS.

If 1ml of your CDS added to 2oz of water tests at 100 ppm, then you have 6000 ppm CDS; add 2oz more and it should test at 50 ppm and that would confirm 6000 ppm CDS.

You can use the dilution calculator to confirm all this genesis2forum.org/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=16&id=10312&Itemid=66 .

If this seems complicated, then just add 1ml of the CDS to 4oz (118ml) of distilled water and tell us what you get for a ppm reading, and we'll go from there.

And if your test strips top out at 100, I would suggest that you do it in the 4 oz - Then let us know, as Michael says. The reason I make this statement is that if you do it in the 2 oz, and you have around 6000ppm/L it's going to show you the top of the chart - and you can't be sure whether you're at the top of the chart or over the top of the chart.

Welcome to the club of happy CDS makers! I'll be making another batch tomorrow, I believe.

Pam and Michael

Thank you for the very quick reply.

I put 1ml of the CDS into 4oz water the colour on the test strip looked very close to 25 ppm.

Is this accurate enough to work out the ppm of the CDS that I made.

I also used a ceramic bubble diffuser as I could not get a glass diffuser in a hurry.

If you are getting 25ppm in 4 oz, this would be the 3000ppm/L dosage and you would take 1mL=3drops mms.

Not to worry about the diffuser.

Please keep us posted on how the CDS works for you.

Pam,

I was wondering... if the PPM is so important... why isn't there more talk or info of the time that the CDS is evaporating into the 8oz. of distilled water a huge factor ? I mean, the more it evaporates, the stronger the solution, yes ? So, I would think that a chart showing say, 5, 6 8 min, etc... = a certain PPM would be helpful.. no ?

Any thoughts ?

Yes, when "making" cds, the longer the gas is coming over from the mixing bottle and going into (infusing into) the distilled water in the receiving bottle, the stronger the PPMS are getting in the distilled water. Once the gas is there, and you are no longer inducing more gas, the ppms in the 8 oz bottle should remain fairly constant, (at least long enough to measure) - That's the point where you determine what your final PPM and thus your dose size will be. And if you then keep the CDS capped tightly in the fridge in a colored jar or bottle, the gas will "defuse" (is that a word) from the distilled water slowly over time, but you should be able to use the 8 oz up before it loses enough of its potency to cause a problem.
