There was story from Afghanistan on whole families suffering from opium addiction. In it an old man said, when they bury him, his body won't decompose, because the amount of opium he's used will preserve him! Think, a part of the addicts recovery process is clearing the drug out of the system. But because it's a physical addiction this is where you would get the withdrawal symptoms. This is probably where chlorine dioxide which oxides or breaks down anything harmful or foreign inside of the body, will have an effect.
When people first get addicted, the story is always the same, they started with a small amount of the drug. Part of the addiction process is the body can tolerate more and more of the drug, so you need more of the drug to get high.
