He removed the batteries from the smoke detectors before they were dead - they still had energy left in them - enough to get very hot and ignite the paper bag he put them in when their terminals were shorted, releasing the remaining energy inside the batteries.

Better to have two smoke detectors with their batteries installed months apart. Then when one battery goes dead, the other battery in the other smoke detector would still provide protection if there was smoke to detect. Plus, two smoke detectors provides a backup. When a smoke detector battery is about to go dead, it alerts you with annoying beeps.
