Hilary,

You said that you take 4 drops of Lugol's daily. My question is how do you take these drops, directly into your mouth under the tongue or on the tongue, on the skin or drink mixed with water?

Just received my bottle of Lugol's and am anxious to try it.

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

Initally, I started on 2 drops and upped to 4, mixed in a glass of water. The instructions that came with the bottle said to take up to 7 drops then reduce dose. Because now i am on so many other natural tablets and liquids I got a bit lazy and now I put the iodine straight onto my skin. I run lines up and down my left arm from wrist to elbow - about 3 lines, every day.

Hope that helps. Also, found the following info for you to think about.

Cheers
Hilary

Adrenal Repair Can Improve Thyroid Function 8 October 2006

A study published in the October 2006 edition of the journal Endocrinology Practice has shown that low levels of thyroid hormone can normalise if coexistent adrenal fatigue is first addressed. Three patients with biochemical evidence of low thyroid function were also found to have low adrenal function. In all 3 patients, thyroid hormone levels normalised with the use of physiologic doses of adrenal hormone (cortisol). All 3 continued to have normal thyroid function at 4 year follow up. The authors suggest that thyroid hormone replacement in the setting of adrenal insufficiency could be unwarranted.

Take home message: the thyroid-adrenal relationship is complicated and frequently overlooked. Adrenal fatigue is an undiagnosed epidemic and supplementation with thyroid hormone without attention to the adrenals is fraught with difficulty. Adrenal fatigue in my opinion is best diagnosed by a series of salivary cortisol levels taken throughout the day. Anyone with the diagnosis of low thyroid function should also have their salivary cortisols measured. If they are low, a programme to repair the adrenals will at least minimise the amount of thyroid hormone needed and may even negate it. Commencing thyroid hormone with severely fatigued adrenal glands can precipitate an adrenal crisis. If you want to look at it in the way I look at it….”it’s like putting the pedal to the metal with the handbrake still on—you’re just going to create a lot of smoke and burn the tyres out but not actually get anywhere.”

Some more info:

Ashwagandha (withania somnifera) is an Ayurvedic herb from India which has been used for thousands of years. It is an adaptogen. Adaptogens have 5 properties:

1. Non-specific resistance — increase the bodies resistance to physical, chemical and biological (infection) stress.
2. Normalising action — increase under active systems and decrease over active systems.
3. Innocuous — minimal if any physiological disturbance or side-effects.
4. Balancing — must balance the body’s regulatory systems (cardiovascular, immune and neuroendocrine systems).
5. Modulation — must modulate the bodies stress response system so it reacts in proportion to actual danger and doesn’t deplete cells of vital energy.

Ashwagandha is a great herb for people with low thyroid function because it helps convert the inactive thyroid hormone (T4) into the active form (T3). It influences cholinergic and GABA receptors in the brain to improve memory. Being an adaptogen, it is also a useful medicine in adrenal fatigue to increase energy.

Thank You Hilary,

My bottle of Lugol's had no instructions at all, so this gives me somewhere to start.

The information on the adrenal-thyroid connection is very interesting. I had thought some time ago that maybe I had an adrenal problem, but never followed up on it. When I read the post on hypothyroidism it reminded me that over thirty years ago I had been treated for it with no real results, but nothing was ever said about low iodine levels.

Tewnty two years ago I was diognosed with Lupus and with all of its issues it was hard to separate out specific problems for specific treatments. I have been using MMS for 4 years now and have not had a flare since. But the issues I still have all fall under symptoms for hypothyroidism and maybe low adrenal function also. I have heard of Ashwagandha but have never tried it, but certainly will check it out.

Thank You Again, Joyce

Things are going really well. I found a good Holisitc GP near Brisbane and my thyroid underactivity is now classed as sub clinical, which means that the Dr will not be prescribing me any medications for it. I certianly do not have any symptoms now. I am not sure if this is due to the large amounts of iodine i took, various homeopathic drops the Dr gave me or diet that worked.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum. I have tried to take mms twice and have had to stop. I have low thyroid - much improved doing liver cleanses but still have it. I take very little thyroid medication. I started back on a low dose since taking the mms. My symptoms that I know of are mainly cold hands and feet and sometimes sleepy in quiet situations (like sitting in church). After taking mms and upping the dosing over time I experienced mood changes until it is obvious the mms is doing it - not happy and I become freeeezzing cold in normal temperatures. I suspect the mms is preventing the thyroid from working. I have read about Lugol's iodine and have ordered it. I want to try to get back on mms as I know it was killing out parasites - I saw worms in the toilet :)

Anyone out there with low thryoid able to stay on mms using Lugols? I am curious about what homeopathics are good for low thyroid.

Thanks!

Ellen

I am taking a natural thyroid mediciene called "Thyroid". As I am upping my meds I am experiencing mood swings but as the meds stabaliize in my system then mood swings go away. It is hard to determine if you are going over the limit or are still under the limit because the symptoms are similar. The one difference is being cold or hot. Cold you are still under the level you need and hot is when you are adjusting to a new level or are over.

I have taken mms and have never got mood swings from that.
