Hi,

I think I am getting a reaction to citric acid.
I am wanting to change to Hydrochloric Acid, but checking if it is safe to obtain this from the hardware store and dilute it myself?

I already bought some and did the dilution. When I mixed it with the sodium chlorite it turned yellow very quickly compared to citric acid. The bottle says it contains min 3200 G/L of Hydrochloric Acid and after checking I believe this is 32%. Anyone else's Hydrochloric Acid react quickly?

Thanks

Yes, you can use the Muriatic (which is hydrochloric) acid from the hardware store and dilute to 4% with distilled water. You definitely will need to dilute it (dilution calculators are online) - does the container tell you what percentage the acid is? You'll need that information to use the dilution calculator.

Thanks for the response Pam.

It only says minimum 320 grams per litre which calculates to 32%.
Just recalculated and realized my dilution was off quite a bit, will fix it later.

the use of Hydrochloric Acid from Hardware Store is like use car oil for coooking your food. normally this HA from Hstores is yellow from iron and a lot more of inpurities, arsenic? lead? Hg?... so this is not for human consum. the best is HA Ph grade, Ph=pharmaceutical grade.

pure Hydrochloric Acid is water clear...

thanks pneumatician.

I decided to ditch the Hydrochloric Acid from the hardware store all together. I will purchase off a proper store at a later date.
The stuff is too dangerous to be playing around with. As soon as I opened the bottle it started to smoke.

The Hydrochloric Acid I purchased is clear, but still I'm not going to make estimations based on the label which stated MINIMUM 320 g/l which is not really accurate.

I got mine from Home Depot. And is not food grade is a very STRONG ACID none will survive on it. SO you can use it. I need a picture of the label you have or the CAS number in the LABEL to check the Safety Data Sheet and tell you how to make your 4%. That will tell you if have arsenic or any harm substance. Normally they don't have anything that can harm you. IS a VERY STRONG ACID.

in reality this is previously discused here. the level of dissolution and quantity of use make the impurities infime BUT normally this acid come in PLASTIC bottles + the bad effect can come from homeopathy quantities + the diference of price is low...

the fumes is because HCL is a gas "trapped" in water.

Excellent, from the information from the MSDS the Density is 1.18 gram/ml and the percent is 26 - 30% base on that information you have a 8.42 to 9.71 molar solution. I will use the higher concentration to calculate your 4% and your 5% solution. Also going to make a liter or 100 ml solution calculation.

The formula is M1V1 = M2V2

the 4 % is 1.09 molar and the 5% is 1.37 Molar
So Replacing Values

for 4 % is (9.71)(X)=(1.09)(1000)
X = 112 ml in one liter or 11 ml in 100 ml

For 5% is (9.71)(X)=(1.37)(1000)
X= 141 ml in one liter or 14 ml in 100 ml

To prepare the solution you need to add 112 ml to a 500 ml then add the extra water to the mark of 1 liter. Same apply to 100, put 50 ml then add the 11 ml and then add the extra water to complete the 100ml. Be sure that the final volume is always equal to 1 liter or 100 ml no more.
