I received some "LaMotte Chlorine Dioxide Insta-Test - High Range 0-500ppm" Test Strips today so I tested all my different batches following the instructions on this page:

mmswiki.is/index.php?title=How_to_make_CDS_-_Chlorine_Dioxide_Solution

* My old original batch of MMS came out at 3,000ppm
* The new batch that makes me feel strange came out at 10,000 ppm
A new batch I made from Flake from the supplier of my original batch also came out at 10,000 ppm.
* The CDS I made from the instructions on this pdf: g2crforum.org/media/kunena/attachments/98/CDS-how_to_make_3000_ppm_using_4pc_HCL.pdf came out at 1,000 ppm.
* The CDH I made from the instructions here: www.cdhinfo.org/making---using-cdh.html came out at 1,000 ppm.

So from those results it seems my original batch was the correct strength. The new batches too strong and the CDS & CDH too weak?

The method of measuring CLO2 ppm at mmswiki.is/index.php?title=How_to_make_CDS_-_Chlorine_Dioxide_Solution is guaranteed to give wrong results. Using 1 "drop" to measure CLO2 ppm? What size drop? The author did not mention that different droppers will dispense different amounts of solution.

There are so many errors in that article, it needs to be rewritten.

If you want to accurately measure CLO2 ppm, use this method:
mmsinfo.org/infosheets/measuring_the_strength_of_CD_CDS_CDH.pdf

Tell us what you measure now.

Thanks.

I looked for that pdf before doing the test but it's not there any more:

Error 404!
/infosheets/measuring_the_strength_of_CD_CDS_CDH.pdf
File Not Found!

Yes, I've often wondered about the advisability of using 'a drop' as a measurement, because as you say every one is different. For my tests I used 100 drops of distilled water (instead of the 5ml it suggested) to one drop of mms/cds/cdh then multiplied the result by 100. At least that way I knew it to be 100 to 1 ratio. Of course the less multiplying you do the more accurate it's likely to be.

Do you remember the measurements it suggests using in that pdf?

Hmmmm, let me check why you are getting that error at MMSinfo.org

The file was not there??? Its back now.

Instead of trying to measure the ppm of 1 "drop" the method in the PDF files uses 24 drops.

By the way, the G2C is now saying that 20 drops equals 1 ml of solution. A few years ago Jim said that 24 drops was equal to 1 ml, so that is the number we have been using for all the testing. Now they want to change it? Too late for that. And years ago we suggested to Jim that 20 drops = 1 ml was a standard, but he wanted to use 24 drops, so we did and will continue to do so. Too late to change now.

Thanks for sorting that out, CLO2.

I re-ran 2 of the tests. The batch of MMS I made from flake came out a bit darker than the 100 mark but not as dark as the 250, so around 10,000 ppm. The CDS came out slightly darker than the 10 mark so around 1000 ppm.

Seems my initial tests weren't far off the mark. The CDS was made using the MMS I made up so if it's stronger than it's supposed to be why is the CDS weaker...

Hi. Something is not right with those numbers. Can you describe the 10,000 ppm solution you measured? Is it MMS1? How did you make it and which ingredients did you use? Your procedure including how you measured the ppm?

Thanks.

The MMS1 I made from this Sodium Chlorite flake, following the instructions on the package.

To test it I measured out 1ml of the MMS into a shot glass and added 1ml of 4%HCL waited 20 seconds and then added 60ml of distilled water to it, stirred and then dipped the test strip into it for 2 seconds and waited 10 seconds before checking the colour against the chart.

Is that correct or did I do something wrong?

Okay, I follow what you did. Probably fine to do that for a test. Let me do the same test and get back to you later today.

I performed a similar test to yours. Here is what I did.

1. Combined 1 ml of MMS + 1 ml 4% HCL into a shot glass, mixed the solution for about 2 seconds, then sucked it up into a 3 ml syringe for 30 seconds.

2. After 30 seconds of activation, squirted the MMS+HCL into 58 ml of distilled water for a total of 60 ml of solution.

3. Measured about 500 ppm using LaMotte high range 0-500 ppm CLO2 test strips.

4. Added more distilled water for a total of 200 ml of solution.

5. Measured with another test strip and showed 100 ppm in 200 ml of solution.

6. Determined the dose to be 20 mg of CLO2 using formula: Dose (mg) = Volume (liters) x Concentration (ppm). 0.2 liters x 100 ppm = 20 mg of CLO2

7. So, this 20 mg dose of MMS1 is about 12% activated, more than it would have been if I had not used the 3 ml syringe to hold the solution while it activated. (less loss of CLO2 gas escaping)

8. If this MMS1 24 drop dose was ingested into a normal stomach, the total amount of CLO2 should be 161 mg. If not ingested, then 20 mg as measured externally is the dose.

9. Note that you can't dose using just ppm, you also need to know the amount of solution to find the quantity of CLO2. The reference used is 1 drop of fully activated MMS will produce 6.7 mg of CLO2. It is assumed that 1 ml equals 24 drops of solution as Jim Humble noted a few years ago. All testing since then has used 24 drops equals 1 ml of solution.

10. Since the CLO2 concentration for this test was 100 ppm in 200 ml of solution, then in 60 ml it would measure 333 ppm. The ppm resolution on the test strip is hard to see when between 250 and 500 ppm colors. The best color to aim for is 50 ppm.

Hope this helps.
